10. We The People ... - A Tribe Called Quest
A Tribe Called Quest are a new art-rap outfit coming up out of New York who released their debut album, Whateva Will Be, in 2016. Frontman Q-Tip - cousin of old-school gangsta rapper ScHoolboy-Q - partners with Snoop Dogg, going by his alter ego Phife Dog and ratcheting his flow up more than just a few notches for this side project, and together they deliver a really strikingly different, original take on hip hop whose newness is never more apparent than it is on the title track of Whateva Will Be, We The People ... Those ellipses aren't a typo, by the way; that's the name of the song; I know how to use punctuation, better than that - but I guess it's an art thing?
We The People ..., as well as being awkward when incorporated into a multi-phrase sentence, is a creative, modern reimagining of the classic American fantasy novel the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States of America, and personally I think it's a very faithful interpretation. James Maddison, for instance, was often noted for his dislike of statisticians, and of bad bitches who won't spit on that.
For these young turks to have such a refined and polished debut is remarkable and a great sign for the future of rap, and for that reason We The People ... is my 10th best song of 2016.
