7. Satan - D.D Dumbo
There's a scenario that comes to mind, and it is this:
What if instead of his lucky white feather Dumbo had found a dark, black feather, one that promised great power - power over fear, power over gravity, power over life itself? What if, instead of being racist caricatures, the Crows were minions of the Dark Lord? What if they were sent by Him to jive talk and cajole and coerce the innocent Dumbo into a reliance on the gifts of the Infernal One? What if, rather than telling the young one that the power had been within him all along, they were here simply to bear witness to the slow turning to anger and angst of the innocent elephant calf? If they were present as emissaries of Satan Himself to reinforce rather than dispel his fear? If their purpose was to ignite in him a will to power that would see him rise as an unrestrained Beast?
What then of the elephant bull, grown to adulthood, a bulbous, scarred and scorched corpse of a creature, legs atrophied from his disdain of the sacred earth, tusks cracked and encrusted with the blood of the victims of his terror, his trunk withered and balled up protectively around a single living black crow feather, its quill embedded in the skin of his proboscis, living still, pulsing with the congealed ichor it drained out of him along with his life force and what little remained of his memory of his infant innocence?
What if you'd seen damn near everything, but the last thing you ever saw was an elephant fly?
What then of Dumbo? What then?
Anyway, this song isn't about that, and that's why it's my 7th best song of 2016.
