20. Variant - These Hidden Hands feat. Lucrecia Dalt
Saran wrap is a fetish in America. I mean it's a fetish everywhere, but especially in America. You know why? Saran wrap sounds exotic, like a new oriental beauty spa treatment Mehmet Oz would recommend if your hectic soccer-mom ways are clogging your pores with "unsightly stress bumps". It's the sort of trendy CBD lunch you buy for seventeen fifty with a caffeine-free soy moccachino. Saran wrap is laverbread if your bistro is closer to London than Cardiff. It's what seaweed calls itself when its daughter is fianced to a 28-year-old junior on Harley Street so as not to embarrass her at an end-of-tax-year cocktail party.
In Australia we call it cling film. Cling film. No one has a fetish for cling film. Cling film is what bogans call romcoms.
This isn't, believe it or not, an official video. Someone just heard Variant and thought: "You know what this song needs? Bondage that will keep your tits fresh for between three and five days in the fridge." And then they went and did that, and threw in some mirrors because, honestly, you box up some really great leftovers, you want to examine that shit from every angle, amirite?
Seriously though, the person who made this understood Variant, understood Jesse Draxler, and understood how to make a dark, grungy, industrial artwork to sit alongside the dark, grungy, industrial artwork that is my 20th best song of 2016.
